How to tell if you have a cockroach infestation and what you should do to get rid of them?
Cockroaches are nocturnal insects. They usually hide out of sight during the day and only become active at night to search for food. Because they can flatten their bodies to fit into narrow areas, so you usually found cockroaches hiding in cupboard hinges, behind wallpaper and within wall cracks. The sighs of cockroach infestation are:
Fecal droppings
Smaller cockroaches will leave behind dropping that is similar to the coffee ground or black pepper. Larger cockroaches will leave larger droppings: The numbers of droppings are a clear indicator of traffic areas for cockroaches. They often come through that area to scavenge for food and water.
Egg capsules
Cockroaches produce egg capsules, which hold multiple eggs inside. These egg capsules usually called oothecae. It can hold between 10~40 eggs inside. If you find any signs of cockroach eggs, you need to take immediate action to stop the eggs from hatching. The only way to do that is to use Insect Growth Regulators (IGR) to stopping cockroaches able to make more eggs.
Unusual Odour
A single cockroach may give a little or no odour, but a large number of them combined will definitely get your attention. It is a musty, oily and pungent odour. If you notice a strong, pungent odour and suspect a cockroach infestation, your best option is to contact Green shield pest control.
Public health importance
Nuisance
Cockroaches are important pests because they spread filth and ruin food, fabrics and book-bindings. They disgorge portions of their partially digested food at intervals and drop faeces. They also discharge a nauseous secretion both from their mouths and from glands opening on the body which give a long-lasting, offensive cockroach smell to areas or food visited by them.
Diseases
Cockroaches move freely from building to building or from drains, gardens, sewers and latrines to human habitations. Because they feed on human faeces as well as human food they can spread germs that cause disease. Cockroaches are not usually the most important cause of a disease, but like houseflies, they may play a supplementary role in the spread of some diseases. They are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms causing:
— diarrhoea
— dysentery
— cholera
— leprosy
— plague
— typhoid fever
— viral diseases such as poliomyelitis.
In addition, they carry the eggs of parasitic worms and may cause allergic reactions, including dermatitis, itching, swelling of the eyelids and more serious respiratory conditions
How to get rid of cockroach?
Cockroaches can survive in all kinds of conditions and are very resourceful in finding ways into buildings. There are several ways that can help to prevent cockroach infestation.
Eliminate Food Sources
Cockroaches are persistent scavengers and they attracted by food and moisture. The most effective way to prevent cockroach is to deny them easy access to food and water.
Maintain the cleanliness regularly.
- Clean kitchen, table, counter, desk and equipment thoroughly at the end of the day and to ensure there is no food scrap left behind.
- Keep sink and below cooking range clean and dry. Cockroaches can live without water for one to two weeks as long as the moisture content in their food is high.
- Clean food spillage immediately.
Scan children’s bag when they return home as well as grocery item before storing them.
Rubbish management
- Empty rubbish bins at least once a day.
- Rinse the residue in tins, cans, bottles and plastic container to reduce the attraction of cockroaches.
- Keep rubbish bins covered at all times when not in use.
- Bag, tie and dispose of all food wastes and rubbish.
Store food in airtight covered containers and always avoids leaving food out. (Including pet food!)
Declutter
Cockroach droppings contain a pheromone that signals to other cockroaches that they have found a safe place to inhabit. Remove clutter from your business of home will prevent cockroach droppings from accumulating; such as cardboard, packaging, old newspapers and magazines.
Eliminate Shelters and Entry Points
- Dispose of unwanted boxes, crates, piles of newspapers and other articles.
- Store goods properly and inspect the storage area regularly.
- Seal any holes or crevices in the ceilings, walls, floors or under the kitchen sink and bathroom cabinets.
- Ensure that floor traps and downpipe are properly covered with grating.
- Regularly checking leakage of pipes and drains and clearing blocked drains is a good cockroach prevention measure.
